Giardia Ag – Giardia Antigen Rapid Test
Giardia is one of the most common intestinal parasites in dogs and cats, and a typical hidden cause of recurring diarrhoea that can last for months. It is often misdiagnosed because cysts are shed intermittently — a single negative sample does not rule out infection.
Accuracy – manufacturer validation
Compared with PCR as the reference method, on 300 samples:

When is the test recommended?
- Recurring or chronic diarrhoea
- Soft, mucousy or unusually foul-smelling stool
- Weight loss, or poor growth in young animals
- When a new dog or cat arrives
- For animals coming from a kennel, shelter or breeder
- If diarrhoea returns after treatment
How does it work? Three steps
-
1
Collect a fresh stool sample with the sampling swab provided. No invasive procedure is needed.
-
2
Mix the sample in the buffer solution provided, then add it to the sample well of the cassette as described in the manufacturer's instructions.
-
3
Read the result between 5 and 10 minutes; after 15 minutes the result is invalid. Perform the test at room temperature.
Reading the result

Positive
Giardia antigen detected in the sample. Even a faint T line is a positive result. Contact your vet to discuss treatment.

Negative
No antigen detected. Cysts are shed intermittently, so if symptoms persist it is worth repeating the test within 2–3 days.

Invalid
No control line, so the result cannot be interpreted. Repeat the test with a new cassette.
When should you test again?
- If symptoms return after treatment. According to the CAPC, antigen may remain detectable for some time even after successful treatment, so your vet will decide how and when to carry out the follow-up test.
- If symptoms persist despite a negative result — within 2–3 days
- In multi-pet households if any animal has diarrhoea, because Giardia spreads quickly via shared bowls and litter trays
- When a new animal arrives
