FIPV Ab – Feline Coronavirus Antibody Rapid Test
This test does not detect the virus itself but the antibodies the body produces against it, in a blood sample from your cat. It answers the question of whether the cat has ever been exposed to feline coronavirus — so it serves a different purpose from the stool-based antigen test.
Accuracy – manufacturer validation
Compared with ELISA as the reference method, on 330 samples:

What does it tell you — and what not?
- It tells you: whether the cat has been exposed to feline coronavirus, i.e. whether it has antibodies against it.
- It does not tell you: whether the cat has FIP. Feline coronavirus is extremely widespread — in multi-cat environments most cats are antibody-positive without ever becoming ill.
- Diagnosing FIP is a job for your vet, based on clinical signs, blood count, total protein/albumin ratio and, if needed, analysis of abdominal fluid. Antibody levels alone are never sufficient.
When is the test recommended?
- In catteries or multi-cat households, to assess the status of the group
- Before taking in a new cat, during quarantine
- If your vet needs more information for an FIP work-up
- As repeat screening when building a coronavirus-free group
How does it work? Three steps
-
1
Take a fresh blood sample with the pipette provided. Serum and plasma can also be used. Blood sampling is best left to a vet.
-
2
Add the sample to the sample well of the cassette, then add the buffer as described in the manufacturer's instructions.
-
3
Read the result after the time stated in the instructions, at room temperature.
Reading the result

Positive
Antibodies detected: the cat has been exposed to coronavirus. This is very common and on its own does not mean FIP. Interpret the result with your vet in light of any symptoms.

Negative
No antibodies detected. After a recent infection it can take a few weeks for antibody production to start, so if infection is suspected it is worth repeating the test later.

Invalid
No control line, so the result cannot be interpreted. Repeat the test with a new cassette.

Important information
A rapid test is a pre-screening tool: it gives you a quick indication but does not replace a veterinary examination. A positive antibody result does not equal FIP disease.
