FIPV Ag – Feline Coronavirus Antigen Rapid Test
Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is extremely widespread, and most infected cats never become ill. This test detects the virus antigen in a fresh stool sample from your cat — in other words, whether the cat is shedding the virus. In multi-cat households and catteries this is the key question, because shedding cats keep the chain of infection going.
Accuracy – manufacturer validation
Compared with PCR as the reference method, on 300 samples:

What does it tell you — and what not?
This is the most important thing to know about this test, so we put it up front:
- It tells you: whether the cat is shedding feline coronavirus in its stool.
- It does not tell you: whether the cat has FIP (feline infectious peritonitis). FIP develops when the otherwise harmless intestinal coronavirus mutates inside the body — no rapid test can detect this from stool.
- Diagnosing FIP is a job for your vet, based on the clinical picture, blood count, total protein/albumin ratio and, if needed, analysis of abdominal fluid.
When is the test recommended?
- In multi-cat households or catteries, to identify shedders
- Before taking in a new cat or during quarantine
- For persistent diarrhoea of unknown cause
- If there has already been a case of FIP in the household and you want to know which cats are shedding
- For breeders, before kittens are weaned
How does it work? Three steps
-
1
Collect a fresh stool sample from the litter tray with the swab provided, or take a rectal swab.
-
2
Mix the sample in the buffer solution provided, then add it to the sample well of the cassette as described in the manufacturer's instructions.
-
3
Read the result after the time stated in the instructions, at room temperature.
Reading the result

Positive
The cat is shedding coronavirus. On its own this does not mean FIP — most shedding cats remain completely free of symptoms. In a multi-cat environment, however, it is worth taking hygiene measures and consulting your vet.

Negative
No antigen detected in the sample. Virus shedding is intermittent and varies in intensity, so a single negative sample does not rule out infection — for screening, several samples taken on different days are usually tested.

Invalid
No control line, so the result cannot be interpreted. Repeat the test with a new cassette.

Important information
A rapid test is a pre-screening tool: it gives you a quick indication but does not replace a veterinary examination. The test indicates virus shedding, not FIP disease.
